This was a great family effort. Designed by Jeannette at Virgo Design, Carved me, Primed by me, Hand painted by Kate and Myself and installed by myself and the father/son team that owned the sign. It is two sided and 24" in diameter. We used caraige bold with gold leaf on them to simulate the brass tips of the spindles.![]()
Double faced, 5" thick 3 foot tall trout in foam/epoxy/plywood. Finished with automotive paints in translucent layer. Unfortunately the restaurant is gone now and so is the sign.
That sucks! You make a beautiful sign for what you think is a high end business and they go out of business the next year! That has happened to me 3 times in the past few years.
Sometimes when a project is large and complicated it will be weeks of fabricating and finishing. Then add in the tough winter weather which makes scheduling a day to go out and install a moving target and it can seem like the sign has always been in our shop. Well today we finally installed a large carved sign we started in early January. It is made on a light weight curved wooden form that is built to accept a 1" HDU face. We had to carve and edge glue the face prior to laminating it to the frame with MAS epoxy since it was so big, 10' X 5' X 9". Then we started the whole sand, prime, paint and decorate cycle. So a month later and this morning we packed up the truck with all the tools we could think of loaded the sign and headed to Concord NH about 55 miles away. Murphy;s law says the further away from the shop the installation the more chance you will forget the crucial piece so we always over pack when traveling to install signs.
I love the curve and the way you achieved it.
I have been waiting my whole sign career to do an installation like this! Thanks to Lang's Landscaping in Manchester who created this beautiful wall to mount this handcarved, airbrushed Signfoam sign on. It is 66" x 35" x 6". It was great fun to do and the installation went flawlessly with my new Generac generator.![]()
Welcome to my sign centric world. This will be an on going journal and journey of the day to day operations of our custom sign shop, Keene Signworx in Keene NH. We specialize in producing very creative carved, and dimensional signs but dabble in a little of everything sign related. Expect this journal to include the technical, the outrageous and the mundane bits and pieces. Your welcome to come along as we figure this out. Below is an example of the type of unique signs we produce.
Hi Peter, You do beautiful work. I thought someone told me you were out of the sign business because of a health issue. Clearly you are doing great work at full tilt. Glad you to see it.
